Christ's Death and Resurrection

  Tour of Israel

Garden of Gethsemene

Christ often went to the Mount of Olives to pray. On the night that he was arrested, he prayed in this garden in great agony, while his friends were off snoozing. It was here where he received the betraying kiss of Judas. (Mark 14:32-49)

These old olive trees might easily have been around during Christ's time.

Church of the Holy Sepulchre

Christ was crucified probably on the area where this church was built. Below this crucifix of Christ, that is within the church, is a place where you can feel the hole in the rock where his cross was said to have been placed. (Mark 15:16-39)

The large church covers both the area thought to be Calvary and possibly the area where his body might have been placed.

Sepulchre

After Christ was crucified, his body had to be placed in a borrowed tomb since the Sabbath was fast approaching. (Luke 23:50-24:12)

The oldest traditions hold that Christ's body was placed within this tomb (that is now within the Church of the Holy Sepulchre) for the days prior to his resurrection. It is now a rather gaudy type of shrine within the church. These candles burned on the slab of stone where his body had been placed.

The Garden Tomb

Some hold that the place where his body was placed was here at this garden, which is maintained by a group from England. Whichever place his body may have been laid, it saw a remarkable supernatural occurrence on that first Easter Sunday. (Mark 15:42-16:6)

Meggido

The Bible describes that during the last days there will be a huge battle fought at this place, also known as Armageddon. (Revelation 16: 13-16)

The valley below is the Jezreel Valley, a fertile valley in the Galilee region.

The Golden Gate

At the time of the Messiah's return, it is believed that he will come through this gate again.

In the 1600's the gate was closed. Presently there is a Muslim cemetery all outside this side of the city. In fact, it is "cemetery-city" all along the Kidron Valley. By the old wall lies the the Muslim cemetery; down in the valley, the Christian cemetery, plus Absalom's Tomb; and covering the hill beside Gethsemene is another huge Jewish cemetery.
